Applied Research Topic:

ATL08 analyses for bottom roughness and topography studies in Mexico, with applications to weather modelling and wind energy resource characterization.

ATLAS Data Product used: ATL08

Potential Applications:

Wind energy resource

Abstract:

Numerical modelling of wind energy resources depends on fundamental input data: the topography and the bottom roughness. However, due to the resolution of such models, it is necessary to simplify topography and the bottom roughness, which leads to significant uncertainties in the wind energy model predictions. The objective of this project is to use and generate topography and bottom roughness products, to incorporate this information as boundary conditions into meteorological models, and to assess the effects of different assumptions on the synoptic and statistical characteristics of wind fields. This includes an analysis of the effects on typical renewable energy measures, such as wind energy density and annual energy production.
