Project Science Support
Claudia C. Carabajal is a geophysics/solid Earth scientist supporting the ICESat-2 Project Science Office. She currently works as a Research Scientist, SME with SSAI, Inc. and is Group Lead for the Geodesy and Geophysics Group under HBG (Code 61A), working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, USA. She has extensive experience working on remote-sensing data and laser altimetry products, developing processing algorithms and methodologies for lidar data analysis starting with SLA-01, SLA-02, and later ICESat and ICESat-2 laser altimetry missions. As part of the ICESat calibration and validation team, she helped define and validate land products, developed methodologies to simulate laser altimetry waveforms using an accurate GLAS instrument model and high-resolution digital elevation models, evaluating the instrument's performance, assessing ICESat measurement ranging errors, and enhancing geolocation accuracy while simultaneously validating laser waveforms in vegetated landscapes. She has worked on numerous scientific applications of altimetry data for earth sciences, including hydrogeology and natural hazards. She was a member of the ICESat-2 Ad-Hoc Science Definition Team. She has led the development of a global geodetic control database from ICESat and ICESat-2 altimetry data, valuable in enabling independent and comprehensive validation of topographic assets. She was the Deputy Lead for the ICESat-2/ATLAS Receiver Algorithms Subsystem, and in charge of validation of the onboard relief and elevation ranges databases, and more recently supported the Inland Waters team developing and validating the ICESat-2 Inland Water products. Her research also involves the use of several remote sensing data from imagery, altimetry (Laser and Radar) and Time Variable Gravity to assess water storage changes in lakes and reservoirs. In addition, she coordinates laser ranging activities within the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS), which contribute to the improvement of the precise orbit determination and product geolocation for missions which include ICESat-2.
